FLASHDANCE | The musical is coming to the Cogeco Amphitheater in 2027!

Trois-Rivières, October 20, 2026 – The movie that got the whole world dancing in 1983 is finally coming to the stage! The Amphithéâtre Cogeco will host the very first Quebec adaptation of the cult classic Flashdance, presented by Gestev, on September 9, 10, and 11, 2027. Dance and music will take center stage in this large-scale production, as the iconic hits from *Flashdance*—including “What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” “Manhunt,” “Gloria,” and “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll”—will be performed in their original English versions.

A NEW VISION FOR FLASHDANCE

To bring this first Quebec production to life, Gestev has entrusted the direction to Frédéric Bélanger, the choreography to Yann Aspirot, and the vocal direction to Elise Cormier, who will reimagine Flashdance by infusing it with its own unique stage identity. Inspired by the aesthetics of the 1980s and the industrial character of Pittsburgh, the set design will evolve throughout the story thanks to a blend of metal structures, projections, and lighting effects. Dance will also take center stage, with dynamic and athletic choreography blending modern jazz, ballet, and breakdancing, reflecting the work’s boundless energy.

A director, playwright, adapter, and actor, Frédéric Bélanger has been active on Quebec stages for over 20 years. His notable directing credits include *Twelfth Night*, for which he won the Gascon-Roux Award in 2023, *Pride and Prejudice*, and, more recently, *Quichotte*. His career has also led him to explore musical theater with *The Wizard of Oz* as well as more multidisciplinary projects alongside Cirque Éloize, notably with *Nezha* and *Hotel*.

“Our intention is not to make a copy of the film, but to make *Flashdance* our own and create our own theatrical language. We want to recapture all the energy and passion of *Flashdance*, while offering something that belongs entirely to the stage,” explains Frédéric Bélanger, director.

A PHENOMENON THAT SPANS GENERATIONS

Since its release in 1983, Flashdance has established itself as a pop culture phenomenon, reaching third place at the North American box office with gross receipts of nearly 93 million U.S. dollars. Its famous soundtrack has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, while “Flashdance... What a Feeling,” performed by Irene Cara, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Adapted for the stage in 2008, the show has since captivated audiences in many countries, notably in France, where a Paris production was followed by a tour of more than 40 cities in 2016.

SYNOPSIS

Based on the 1983 cult classic film, FLASHDANCE —The Musical tells the story of Alexandra “Alex” Owens, a young welder from Pittsburgh who divides her time between the steel mill where she works by day and the club where she dances by night. Behind this double life lies a dream: to enroll in the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and turn dance into much more than just a passion. As she tries to carve out the life she longs for, an unexpected romance throws her world and her ambitions into disarray. Faced with social barriers, self-doubt, and the obstacles that stand in her way, Alex must find the courage to believe in herself and seize her chance. A story of love, friendship, and empowerment, driven by a young woman determined to assert herself and pursue her ambitions to the fullest.
