Trois-Rivières, March 20, 2019 - Cirque du Soleil will take up its summer residencies at the Cogeco Amphitheatre in Trois-Rivières for its new show from the Tribute series entitled Joyeux Calvaire. From July 17 to August 17, 2019, all will be invited to discover this 5th opus celebrating the poetic and rebellious work of the Cowboys Fringants. This new show, presented exclusively at the Cogeco Amphitheatre, is created and produced by 45 DEGREES, Cirque du Soleil's events and special projects division.
"We created the Tribute Series - in partnership with the Cogeco Amphitheatre in Trois-Rivières - for the incredible creative opportunity that this concept offers us while paying tribute to Quebec artists. This year, we decided to play with a more contemporary repertoire, but equally unifying. We wanted the deep and sincere connection the Cowboys Fringants have with their audiences to take place in Trois-Rivières. After four vibrant tributes which are Le Monde est Fou (tribute to Beau Dommage), Tout écartillé (tribute to Robert Charlebois), Stone (tribute to Luc Plamondon) and Juste une p’tite nuite (tribute to the Colocs), Joyeux Calvaire is the 5th opus of the Cirque du Soleil Tribute series. This new production will seek to surprise the public - once again - through a poetic universe where nature takes back its rights and where the reality is not what we think it is.
"Lucid and rebel megaphones of a scratched generation, the Cowboys Fringants defy cynicism with a strong and committed poetry in which heart and reason unite in a great festive cry. Ironic and slobbery, touching and real, provocative or even scathing, the Cowboys Fringants are the reflection of a resilient and humanity-laden generation, driven by this seething will to say, shout, scream, rush, but also reach by this simple desire to tell, to delicately highlight what is beautiful in us and around us.

This 75-minute show, created exclusively for the Cogeco Amphitheatre, directed by Jean-Guy Legault and musical direction by Jean-Phi Goncalves, will bring together 27 artists.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, JOYEUX CALVAIRE – TRIBUTE TO THE COWBOYS FRINGANTS
Synopsis
In the heart of a sleepy riverside suburb, as the first Fall coloured glow emerges, a young girl escapes into her fantasy world, carried by the resonant lyrics of the Cowboys Fringants. Prisoner of a world surrounded by small houses of all sizes, she dangles freely on a swing suspended from the beams of an old dock on the banks of the river.
In this soothing place, reality is transformed according to her imagination, concerns and ambitions. Lucid and dreamy, she remakes the world scene by scene, one story at a time, gently building a universe where nature takes back its due and where reality is not quite true. The houses float on the water and twirl between heaven and earth. The trees are made of papier mâché and people are dressed in paper.
Marked by the poetry, passion and humour of the Cowboys Fringants, this hidden imaginary will become reality.
